The Aquaculture Escape Commission is a government-appointed committee set up by the Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs in the summer of 2006. We have been convening since September 2006. Fish escapes are a major challenge, and the Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs is focusing hard on preventing them. The aim is to keep escapes to an absolute minimum.
The most important task of the Commission is to help reduce the risk of escapes from aquaculture facilities. We systematically collect information and carry out investigations in order to discover sequences of events and reasons for escapes. Our task is to ensure that there is a better understanding of escapes and to help identify measures that can prevent them from occurring.
The Commission is made up of people chosen on the basis of their own personal expertise. They do not represent the organisations for which they work, but do bring these organisations’ expertise to the table. The aim for the Commission’s work is to generate confidence through its high professional standards and transparency. We consider values such as teamwork, openness and respect to be vital to our work, and we strive to live up to those standards.
